For every student standing at the edge of adulthood, 2026 feels both exciting and intimidating. The dream of studying further is often paired with a pressing question: How will I afford it? For one hopeful student, the answer came while scrolling through government opportunities late one evening — the Department of Human Settlements Scholarship Programme.

A great student opportunity

This scholarship is more than financial assistance. For a student interested in shaping cities, housing, and infrastructure, it represents a chance to turn talent into service. Administered by the Department of Human Settlements, the programme supports studies that directly contribute to South Africa’s built environment and long-term development goals.

  • Architecture or Architectural Technology

What you need to qualify

To be considered, a student must meet clear requirements:

  • South African citizenship
  • First-time undergraduate status
  • Completed matric with strong results
  • Provisional admission to a recognised institution
  • Demonstrated financial need with supporting documents

From an academic perspective, a matriculant pursuing engineering or technical qualifications typically needs Mathematics and Physical Sciences, while planning and architecture programmes also value strong language and analytical skills.

From Student to Professional: What the Future Holds

For many, the real motivation lies beyond graduation. For someone who completes their qualification usually enters an internship phase, earning approximately R8,000 to R15,000 per month. Within the first year of full employment, earnings often rise to between R180,000 and R350,000 per year, depending on the discipline and employer.

Graduates are well positioned for employment in municipalities, government departments, consulting firms, and construction companies. Because this scholarship aligns with national priorities, it also improves the possibility of job placement after completing the course.

Recognised Institutions for a Student’s Journey

A qualifying student applicant may study at respected institutions such as:

  • University of Cape Town (UCT)
  • University of the Witwatersrand (Wits)
  • University of Pretoria (UP)

For every student who wants to build more than a career — who wants to build communities — the Department of Human Settlements Scholarship Programme offers a meaningful first step toward a future that matters.
